Caravan Salon: Here's How Much the First Fully Electric VW Camper Costs
At the start of the Caravan Salon, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles announced the key figure: The ID. California Cruise starts at 60,761 euros. This turns the long-awaited electric camper, based on the ID. Buzz, into a concrete offering. The lineup begins with a compact model for two people; the electric California family is set to expand gradually through 2028.
With the ID. California Cruise, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is consistently translating the California concept into the electric world for the first time—and setting the starting price at 60,761 euros. That’s significantly less than a fully equipped, classic camper van, but it’s still no bargain: The Cruise is positioned as a flexible electric camper van for weekend trips, spontaneous overnight stays, and everyday life between the campground and the city.
It’s based on the ID. Buzz, whose interior has been upgraded with a sleeping solution for two people. The sleeping area measures 2.03 meters in length and 1.20 meters in width and includes a nine-centimeter-thick fold-out mattress. Ventilation grilles for the front side windows, blackout shades for all windows, as well as two chairs and a table are also part of the camping package. Everything is designed to fit neatly inside the vehicle to save space.
VW Commercial Vehicles is thus drawing more on the simple “beach” concept than on the full-fledged camper with a fixed kitchen unit. The ID. California Cruise is designed to offer one thing above all else: maximum spontaneity without the limitations of a traditional motorhome. At the Caravan Salon 2026, it marks the beginning of a new model series—additional electric California variants are set to follow by 2028. (aum)
